My parents, John and Dorothy Smith, are very creative people and the desire to create was passed to their five children. When I started the 7th grade my mother said: "It is time for you to make your own clothes." So my passion for sewing was born out of necessity.
Many years later my mother asked me to attend a doll making class with her. I did, and I started making dolls. My mother has passed on. I think she sits with me in my studio and laughs with me and sometimes she laughs at me.
I create mixed media soft sculpture art dolls with an Afro-Centric twist. Some are whimsical, some are spiritual, and some honor the strength and beauty of women.
